Unlike Form 990-N, it requires detailed reporting of the organization's finances, programs, governance, officers, compensation, and compliance activities, and may also require additional schedules based on the organization's operations.

After transmission, the IRS processes the return and provides an accepted or rejected status. If rejected, the issue must be corrected, and the return retransmitted.

Failure to file Form 990-EZ on time, or filing an incomplete or inaccurate return, may result in IRS penalties under Section 6652(c)(1)(A).

Penalties are calculated on a per-day basis and depend on the organization's gross receipts.

  • Maximum penalty: the lesser of $13,000 or 5% of gross receipts
